01Design Brief
Nairobi’s CBD is currently experiencing a wave of interest in Street Art, Street photography and street performances. The project provides a permanent home to nurture some of these raw talents by housing some of the activities in an iconic facility beside Nairobi’s CBD's iconic City Market. The rich history and architectural significance of City Market form part of the story of the design of this centre. The project accommodates retail spaces for the existing shops, a large gathering space with acoustic design, exhibition spaces, music production studios, restaurants and underground parking.
02Reflection
Literal translation of shapes into architectural forms is often criticised by academic theorists as lacking nuance and spatial complexity. In this project, however, the literal shape of a bus fit neatly with the function it was intended and I decided not to complicate it.
